"BACK TO CHINA is an extension of a larger project. It takes a familiar object like folded paper-boats children make and play and transform them into a recognizable object that ties itself into everyday culture not only the present but of the past. Trade is also one of the phenomenon of modern culture from the spice routes to the Panama Canal. They have been pivotal in the shaping of our taste buds to our appreciation of art. The Dutch have been known the world over for their trade industry and boats are what made it possible. The history of porcelain is one that has crisscrossed the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean back and forth allowing for the material to transform the object and the object to push the process to new level of aesthetic. The ceramic variant referring to the venerability of mankind, when sailing over the sea also represents aspect of adventure and new perspectives intrigued by the unknown. In using porcelain the little boats are also linked to chinaware as commodity. Objects of trade shipped in the past by Dutch VOC from China to Europe. The work consists of recreating a memory, a situation and an initial reality."
