"Memories of Holland begins with the dawning of a new day, breakfast, what one could seen and has seen. Breakfast is a plate with a typical Dutch setting in the center; a colourful Dutch landscape, a blue cloudy sky with, on the horizon, a farm and a church tower in a crop of trees. The edge of the plate is adorned with five oval icons:
A black and white cow in the meadow, tulips on a table, a windmill in a polder, a pair of wooden shoes and a church in a canalised landscape. On the plate you see a typically Dutch slice of bread we call "knip" with cheese. The sandwich is sliced in six small pieces. A knife and fork are poised as strewn abandoned after a meal.
The whole is done in earthenware.
In the Netherlands people tend to eat their early morning sandwich with a knife and fork in comparison to the buns usually eaten from the hand in other countries.
Eating the slice of bread is like the toddler eating porridge, the faster you eat, the sooner you get to see the image displayed on the bottom of the plate. This way there are several ways of compose this souvenir.
The cup of coffee
A typically Dutch porcelain cup, half-drunken coffee and coffee-and-cream coloured with a spoon in it. The end of the spoon is shaped like a wooden shoe. It's really hard to keep the edge of the cup dry while drinking the coffee; a trail of coffee is applied on the drinking side. The cup is taking a "footbath" in the saucer; a stain is visible where the spoon has been.
This piece is set in glazed ceramics."
