"The object I would like to realise is a hyperrealistic depiction of a
split-up Dutch flag. The three different colours are being presented
separately as 3 differently coloured soccer scarves. The original team
colours are being replaced by red, white and blue glazes. The names and
signs of the soccer clubs Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV are visible in relief.
The scarves are hung in a triangular composition, tied together with a
black sash, in which a bone is stuck. The piece as a whole has a
cross-shaped composition.
The use of a black sash that holds a flag origins in France. On the day
that celabrates the end of the First World war, the French flag flies
half-mast and is tied up with a black sash.
The use of the flag and the soccer scarves is an attempt to deal with the
concepts of 'identity' and 'religion'. Flag and (soccer) club serve as
symbols that unite people. The falling apart of the flag is to be seen as
a question: Could this be seen as a collapse of (national) identity, in this
case symbolised by the flag? Is the image of the disintegration of the flag
an image for individualisation? The souvenir functions as a reminder, an
external conscience."
