"A souvenir connects what is far away with what is at home, links one period of time (or time-less-ness) with another. It links our outside experiences with ourselves.
Like many of our achievements: in art, language, social structure, etc., a souvenir is able to carry a weight somewhat beyond its original function and boundaries.
What better souvenir, then, than a Tulip: an immigrant flower that is more associated with its new land than its old. The rose, perhaps is spread over the world in greater numbers, but only the tulip keeps its link to a specific country.
The porcelain tulip available here has been carefully moulded from life by a master mould maker, and slip cast in finest porcelain. As a result of the firing process, each tulip, not unlike memories themselves, is slightly different. This object can exist as a single lovely, lonely flower, or combined with several others to form a 'bouquet'.
The title 'je me souviens' is the motto of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is a phrase with its own rich layering of metaphor, generating different resonance in different contexts, the root and description of a souvenir."
